Fernández World Cup form tests Chelsea £120m asking price

Fernández World Cup form tests Chelsea £120m asking price

Enzo Fernández’s decisive performance for Argentina against England has intensified speculation of a £120m transfer to Real Madrid, testing Chelsea’s resolve to keep him under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Enzo Fernández scored an 85th-minute equaliser to lead Argentina past England in Wednesday’s semi-final in Atlanta. The Chelsea midfielder dictated the tempo with a match-high 104 touches and a 98% pass completion rate. This commanding performance places Fernández directly in the shop window ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.

A strong showing against the Spanish side could prove decisive in engineering a summer transfer to Real Madrid. Madrid have already signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this window and desperately need midfield reinforcements following the exits of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. José Mourinho needs additions in that area, and although Madrid issued a public denial of interest in Fernández this month, suggestions persist that they remain interested in acquiring the Argentinian.

Chelsea are holding out for a £120m fee for a player they acquired from Benfica for £106.7m. That asking price is widely viewed as excessive, a perception bolstered by Fernández’s defensive vulnerabilities and a turbulent end to last season. He was banned for two games following a clash with the club, and he previously had to mend fences with teammates after being filmed participating in a racist chant after the 2024 Copa América.

Despite those off-pitch complications, Fernández’s on-pitch output provides a compelling argument for Chelsea to keep him. He scored 12 goals for Chelsea last season and has consistently delivered in crucial moments for Argentina. Xabi Alonso arrived as Chelsea manager this summer tasked with imposing order, and he may ultimately decide that Fernández is precisely the type of fighter needed to lead a new era at Stamford Bridge.

Fernández is intrigued by the idea of living in Spain. Sunday’s final offers him an ideal scouting showcase against a formidable Spanish midfield featuring Rodri, Dani Olmo and Fabián Ruiz. Whether Chelsea’s hierarchy chooses to cash in at a premium or back Alonso to rebuild around him will depend heavily on how the midfielder handles that elite test.
