Man Utd's £86m midfield rebuild begins with Santos debut
Manchester United's new manager Michael Carrick debuted £50m signing Andrey Santos against Wrexham, signalling the start of a major financial and strategic reshaping of the club's midfield.
Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager began with a goalless pre-season draw against Wrexham in Helsinki, marked by the debut of £50m signing Andrey Santos. The Brazilian started in midfield alongside academy product Jack Fletcher, while Leny Yoro played at right-back and Harry Maguire captained the side.
The match at the Olympic Stadium provided early tests for the new-look squad. Wrexham, who started with a fitness advantage, forced an early mistake from goalkeeper Heaton, while United’s Mason Mount saw a corner inadvertently headed against the crossbar by a Wrexham defender. Joshua Zirkzee also hit the post before limping later in the half.
Santos’s arrival from Chelsea earlier this month, for a guaranteed £48m plus £2m in add-ons, underlines the club’s heavy investment in restructuring its engine room. Chelsea also retained a 10 per cent sell-on clause. He was swiftly joined by Youri Tielemans, who arrived from Aston Villa for £36m.
This £86m midfield spend follows a drastic reduction in the squad's wage commitments. Rasmus Hojlund was sold to Napoli for £38m and Andre Onana was loaned to Trabzonspor. United also released several senior players, including Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia.
The transfer strategy marks a shift from earlier market expectations. Ederson had been widely tipped as the first signing to kick-start the rebuild. Instead, Carrick is now shaping a new-look unit comprising Santos, Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Mason Mount.
Despite the significant financial outlay, the club believes another midfielder is still required to achieve the desired balance in the squad. Carrick will integrate these new assets gradually, with the immediate focus in Helsinki centred purely on physical conditioning.
"I am looking for a good performance, but it is more about the boys getting a step up in fitness," Carrick told MUTV. The manager added that he was excited to see youngsters stake a claim and praised Santos specifically, describing him as "a fantastic character who has settled in really well."
