Castlemont, Godolphin's 375,000-guinea yearling, debuts at Windsor
The Godolphin stable will test the commercial value of a 375,000-guinea bloodstock investment when Castlemont, the full brother to top-rated Bay Bridge, makes his racing debut at Windsor.
Castlemont, a son of New Bay purchased for 375,000 guineas as a yearling, will make his first public appearance at Windsor this evening. Trained by Charlie Appleby for the Godolphin operation, the gelding runs in the Join Fitzdares For A Personal Service Maiden Stakes. The race represents the first opportunity for the market to assess whether the significant yearling outlay was justified.
The price tag reflects a high-value European bloodline. Castlemont is a full brother to Bay Bridge, a horse who achieved a peak rating of 122 and notably defeated Baaeed in the 2022 Champion Stakes. Elite racing performances directly translate into future breeding fees and residual asset valuations, making tonight's debut a significant milestone for Godolphin's equine portfolio.
Godolphin is also debuting a second high-profile asset on the same Windsor card. Treble Bass, a half-brother to Lava Stream and a son of leading sire Sea The Stars, will run in the secondary colours. Ray Dawson takes the ride on the gelding, adding another expensive pedigree to the track.
Private and syndicate ownership continues to drive the domestic market alongside the major operations. The Amo Racing outfit will saddle Cool Girl, a Pinatubo filly acquired for €100,000 and partnered with David Egan for trainer Charlie Johnston. Meanwhile, the Clarehaven partnership of John and Thady Gosden and Lady Bamford will run Sunshine Star, a half-sister to Oaks winner Soul Sister. The filly was withdrawn from the Ribblesdale Stakes before bolting up at Lingfield in June.
The cross-Channel market is equally active, with Listed prize money on offer at Vichy in the Prix Frédéric de Lagrange. The French feature pits Christophe Escuder's Saint Martin, a three-time winner this year, against Lady Mara from the Graffard stable. Lady Mara's recent fourth-place finish in the Group 2 Premio Oaks d'Italia Tattersalls at San Siro, ahead of the 94-rated Prizeland, provides a solid form benchmark for the race.
Yann Barberot's undefeated Mazzala, a Frankel gelding, adds further premium breeding value to the Vichy contest. With Maxime Guyon booked to ride, the French card demonstrates how major European sires like Frankel, Sea The Stars, and New Bay dominate the financial architecture of the sport.
