Ukrainian drone strikes targeting an oil depot and retail logistics hubs near Moscow wounded 10 people, underscoring Kyiv's success in disrupting Russian supply chains and daily life.
Ukraine launched scores of drones at the Moscow region on Monday night, striking an oil depot and logistics facilities in an attack that wounded at least 10 people. Russian authorities confirmed the casualties included a child and three Chinese citizens, while buildings and infrastructure sustained damage across multiple towns.
The latest strikes again pulled Russian commercial infrastructure directly into the conflict. Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, was forced to evacuate its logistics centre in the Podolsk district as a precaution before later resuming operations. This follows a separate Ukrainian strike on Wildberries warehouses outside Moscow on Saturday that killed eight warehouse workers, highlighting the growing risk to civilian supply chains.
Kyiv's targeting of oil depots and transport hubs is part of a calculated effort to inflict economic friction far from the front lines. Ukrainian officials say the campaign, which has reached as far as the Urals and Siberia, is designed to damage Moscow's war effort and force the Kremlin to negotiate. The result has been a measurable strain on Russian domestic logistics.
After months of intensified Ukrainian retaliatory strikes, Russia is experiencing fuel shortages and daily disruptions more severe than at any previous point during Moscow's more than four-year offensive. "We are responding, justly, to every Russian strike against our cities and communities," President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday.
Russian air defences reported intercepting almost 400 drones across the wider Moscow region, with Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stating 85 were shot down as they approached the capital. Despite these defences, drones struck the towns of Domodedovo, which hosts a major international airport, and Odintsovo. A fire broke out at a Domodedovo industrial park, residential buildings were hit, and private homes in Podolsk were damaged.
The drone barrage was a direct response to escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. A Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv on Sunday killed one person and wounded 16. June saw the highest number of civilian casualties in Ukraine since 2022, prompting Kyiv to expand the geographic and economic scope of its own strikes.
