LISTED: Which new Vienna roadworks start this week?

Drivers face a lane reduction on the Handelskai from Monday July 20th, with further closures and diversions beginning across Vienna later in the week.

Vienna’s summer roadworks season continues this week, with new restrictions affecting the Handelskai, Rotundenbrücke, Hietzinger Kai and several streets in the 3rd and 23rd districts.

Only one of the projects in the City of Vienna’s latest roadworks announcement begins on Monday, July 20th. Most of the other new works start on Tuesday or later in the week.

The city publishes a weekly advance list of new roadworks , which is normally updated each Friday.

Here are the main changes residents and commuters need to know about.

Roadworks begin on the Handelskai in the 2nd district on Monday July 20th and are scheduled to continue until August 31st.

The affected section runs between the junctions with Dr.-Natterer-Gasse and Meiereistraße, close to the Ernst Happel Stadium and Stadionbad.

One traffic lane will remain available in each direction. Pedestrians will still be able to pass through the area.

The work is taking place amid the wider construction project to extend tram line 18 from U3 Schlachthausgasse to U2 Stadion.

The area around Meiereistraße, Stadionallee and the Handelskai is already subject to changed traffic arrangements connected with that project. The ÖAMTC warns that several construction sites are now active around the Prater and stadium district in its current Vienna roadworks overview .

Several new pipe-laying projects begin in the 2nd and 3rd districts on Tuesday July 21st.

At Rotundenbrücke, the shared pedestrian and cycle path will close until September 6th. Cyclists will be directed onto the road, while pedestrians will have to use the pavement on the opposite side.

Between 8pm and 5am, one traffic lane may also be occupied temporarily during loading work. The other lanes will remain open.

On Rasumofskygasse, traffic will be guided over the tram tracks while work takes place between numbers 1 and 2.

The right-hand lane of Weißgerberlände towards Rasumofskygasse will close, although the remaining lanes will stay open.

Public transport passengers will also be affected. The Löwengasse tram stop will move to the area outside Löwengasse 47 to 51, while the 4A bus stop there will be temporarily suspended.

Separate pipe works on Weißgerberlände near number 62 will begin on the same day. Two traffic lanes will remain open, and pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained.

Trial excavations will take place at the junction of Hafenzufahrtsstraße and Grünhaufenbrücke from July 21st to July 24th.

The work will be carried out at night. Only one lane will remain open in the construction area, with traffic allowed through alternately under the direction of staff.

On Wipplingerstraße in the 1st district, work on water connections, valves and hydrants will also begin on July 21st.

The road will be narrowed near number 13, leaving a remaining width of 3.5 metres. The pavement beside the work will close, and pedestrians will be directed to the opposite side.

Cyclists will be guided past the site by staff. Some work will take place at night, between 9.15pm and 4.50am, when the 1A and 3A buses are not operating.

On Laaer-Berg-Straße in the 10th district, one lane towards the outskirts will close between numbers 100 and 110 from July 21st until August 7th.

On Rautenweg near number 45, the left-hand lane for traffic continuing towards the 21st district will close from July 21st to July 22nd.

On Wagramer Straße, the right-hand left-turn lane towards Julius-Ficker-Straße will close from July 22nd to July 23rd. Other lanes will remain available.

A more substantial closure begins on Willendorfer Gasse in the 23rd district on July 21st.

The street will close between Anton-Baumgartner-Straße and Purkytgasse until August 14th.

Drivers will be diverted via Anton-Baumgartner-Straße, Oldenburggasse and Purkytgasse. Access to authorised parking spaces will remain possible.

Purkytgasse will become one-way from Oldenburggasse towards Willendorfer Gasse during the work.

Further restrictions begin on Ketzergasse and Willergasse on Saturday July 25th and will continue until August 2nd.

Parts of the area will become one-way, lorries weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will not be allowed to enter Willergasse, and traffic will pass alternately through part of the construction zone.

Roadworks begin on Hietzinger Kai in the 13th district on Thursday July 23rd and are expected to last until September 3rd.

One lane towards the city centre will close between numbers 75 and 111.

Hügelgasse will become one-way from Hietzinger Kai towards Auhofstraße.

For two weeks during the construction period, the left-turn lane towards Baumgartenbrücke will also be closed. Pedestrian access will remain available.

These restrictions come on top of numerous longer-running summer works across Vienna, including projects on the Gürtel, Floridsdorfer Brücke, Brünner Straße and around the U2 and U5 construction sites.

The city advises drivers to check its current roadworks map and listings before travelling, particularly where routes pass through several construction areas.
