Bentley hires orchestra to soundtrack first electric SUV
Bentley is using a live orchestra to create the sound for its upcoming Torcal electric SUV, betting that human craftsmanship can differentiate its premium vehicles in a market squeezed by rising component costs and Chinese competition.
Bentley will equip its first electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, with a "Dynamic Symphony" performed by live musicians rather than synthetic engine noise. The soundtrack, played on drums, viola, and bass guitar, responds to driver inputs like throttle and speed.
To develop the sound, Bentley recorded a V8 engine in a studio and analysed the output. The automaker concluded that the emotional appeal of a combustion engine stems from its rhythm rather than its mechanical tone. By comparing a V8 playback to a live drummer using parabolic speakers, engineers found that both shared an energy, cadence, and impact. Both featured subtle variations and imperfections that introduce what Bentley calls "a distinctly human quality."
The resulting composition is original music designed to evoke the feelings of historic Bentley engines, from the 1930s supercharged models to the 6¾-litre V8. It does not attempt to imitate the actual sound of those combustion powertrains.
A premium bet in a tightening market
The Torcal is the electric replacement for the Bentayga, Bentley’s best-selling model. Bentley has not disclosed exact pricing for the electric SUV, but stated it will be comparable to the combustion Bentayga, which starts above £150,000.
Securing that price point will be challenging. The automaker is launching into a market where an AI-driven memory shortage has pushed component costs higher across all electronics categories. Consequently, EV prices are currently rising rather than falling.
In this environment, European legacy automakers are searching for ways to justify premium pricing as they transition away from the mechanical characteristics that traditionally defined luxury vehicles. Sound has become a particular battleground, as electric motors inherently operate in silence.
Competitors have pursued varied solutions. BMW hired composer Hans Zimmer to score the sound of its electric M cars. Most other EV manufacturers rely on synthetic V8 rumbles, spaceship-style whines, or amplified drivetrain hum.
Chinese EV makers are taking an entirely different approach to market share, competing on technological ambition through ventures like flying cars and AI-native smartphones. Bentley, by contrast, is betting exclusively on craft. The company is wagering that a sound made by humans on real instruments will feel fundamentally different to wealthy buyers than one generated by software, even if neither is a true engine.
