Facebook and Instagram outage tests Meta's ad revenue engine
A widespread but partial outage hit Facebook and Instagram on Sunday morning, briefly disrupting the platforms just as Meta positions itself to overtake Google in global digital ad revenue this year.
Facebook and Instagram suffered a partial outage on 19 July. The disruption caused login failures, stalled direct messages, and frozen feeds for users across multiple continents, including Europe.
The trouble began around 3.25am ET and was patchy rather than total. Users in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, India, and Singapore found access flickering on and off. Many encountered desktop websites failing while mobile apps remained functional, though a smaller group reported the exact reverse.
The error messages added confusion to the technical faults. Facebook accounts displayed notices stating they were "temporarily banned" or "currently unavailable due to a site issue." Instagram served its standard "Sorry, something went wrong" prompt. Messenger drew similar reports, though WhatsApp appeared to come through the morning unscathed.
Complaints tracked by Downdetector registered roughly 4,808 Facebook issues in the US by 7.46am GMT and 2,829 for Instagram by 8.18am. As the day progressed, India logged over 1,900 Instagram complaints and 600 for Facebook. These figures naturally track only the shape of the outage, but they confirm a significant international footprint.
For European advertisers and the broader digital economy, the incident is a minor but sharp reminder of Meta's systemic fragility. The company recently posted record quarterly revenue and is forecast to surpass Google in digital ad revenue this year. That business model depends entirely on feeds loading reliably to serve targeted advertisements.
Sunday's disruption was nowhere near the severity of the October 2021 six-hour collapse. During that event, a botched network configuration locked engineers out of their own repair tools and wiped tens of millions of dollars from advertising takings in a single afternoon. However, Sunday fits a troubling recent pattern of instability.
Barely five weeks earlier, on 12 June, a separate wobble drew over 100,000 reports in a single morning and disabled Ads Manager. A widespread March 2024 failure also logged users out en masse.
Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment and offered no cause for the 19 July failures. With Facebook counting roughly 3 billion monthly users and Instagram around 2 billion, even brief, quiet interruptions carry outsized commercial weight.
