Italy's hailstorm insurance losses surge amid warming trend
Severe hailstorms are striking northern Italy with increasing frequency, driving insured losses to record levels and posing a growing structural threat to the region's agriculture and property sectors.
A Bad Bunny concert in Milan was abandoned on Saturday night after strong winds and lightning struck the venue, leaving fans injured. Simultaneously, hailstones measuring up to nine centimetres battered the province of Ferrara, inflicting damage on cars, houses and agricultural land.
These weekend events reflect a broader and increasingly expensive trend for the region. Research published in Nature Geoscience in December 2025 confirms that severe hailstorms are accelerating in northern Italy at a faster rate than anywhere else on the planet.
The economic implications are substantial for both the insurance industry and the agricultural sector. The study, which analysed insurance losses from 1993 to 2023, highlighted the July 2023 storms as a turning point. Those storms, the worst in 40 years, generated $8.6 billion in record losses, with $6.5 billion covered by insurers.
A growing financial burden
During that single month in 2023, 200-gram hailstones injured 242 people while crippling local crops and property. The physical scale of the threat continues to escalate, as demonstrated by the 19-centimetre hailstone that fell in Azzano Decimo in 2023. That stone set a European record, surpassing a 16-centimetre hailstone in Carmignano di Brenta recorded just five days earlier.
The researchers explicitly linked this intensification to climate change, noting "significant correlations between hail events and global warming." Their analysis found that the region had "emerged as a frequent location for severe hailstorms," and that the probability of very large hail there "rose fastest worldwide" between 1950 and 2023.
This atmospheric shift is driven by a documented "increase in low-level moisture and instability in the cold part of storms." For businesses and insurers operating in northern Italy, the research suggests that catastrophic weather damage is transitioning from a periodic risk to a persistent economic challenge.
