Aston Villa signs Gomes for £38m as Premier League transfer costs climb

Aston Villa has completed the £38m signing of Brazilian midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 25-year-old, who earned 10 international caps and made 130 club appearances after arriving from Flamengo, departs after three and a half years.

The acquisition arrives as Villa actively reshapes its squad asset base following the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United. The club is simultaneously preparing for a major capital injection, with Morgan Rogers on the verge of a £117m transfer to Chelsea.

Wolves’ technical director, Matt Jackson, framed the departure positively: "João deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is."

Manchester United's sustained spending underscores the financial arms race within the English top flight. Under manager Michael Carrick, the club has already secured Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but is seeking a third midfielder alongside defensive reinforcements to compete with Luke Shaw.

United is monitoring Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson to fill that defensive need. Hall, 21, has four England caps and a contract until June 2029, having joined Newcastle permanently for £28m plus £7m in add-ons after an initial loan.

Robinson, who made four appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s United States squad at the World Cup, presents a different financial profile. Signed by Fulham from Wigan for £2m in August 2020, he turns 29 next month, making him older than United's typical recruitment target, though his contract runs until June 2028.

United has also acquired 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for an initial £4m, with another £4m available in add-ons tied to first-team performance. The deal structure highlights the complex financial engineering in European football, as Tottenham retained matching rights and a 15% sell-on clause.

Thompson scored 13 goals in youth football last season, including seven in seven UEFA Youth League matches. However, United's asset management faces a potential setback after defender Lisandro Martínez was forced off injured after 41 minutes of Argentina's 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain. The club is still assessing the severity of the issue.
