Christopher Nolan explores horror film concept after The Odyssey sets records

Christopher Nolan is actively contemplating his next film following the current theatrical run of The Odyssey. The production is setting theatrical records for the director and has been met with almost unanimous praise.

During the interview, the director was asked if the horror sub-genres within The Odyssey whetted his appetite for the style. He confirmed that the experience has indeed increased his interest in the genre.

“It very much whets my appetite for more,” Nolan stated regarding the genre. However, he cautioned that horror must be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. He stressed that a filmmaker must have an amazing idea to succeed.

To illustrate his point, the director pointed to Curry Barker’s recent hit movie Obsession, describing it as an amazing idea that works like a motherfucker. He emphasized his creative priorities, stating: “It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking.”

For European media companies and investors, the next move of a director with this level of commercial track record carries significant weight. A shift into the horror genre by a filmmaker of his caliber would represent a major strategic development for the studios backing his work.

The auteur also reflected on how his casting choices and actor relationships influence his future projects. He recalled that Robert Pattinson gave him a book of Oppenheimer speeches at the wrap of Tenet. That specific gift set off the dominoes for his seven-Oscar winning film about the maker of the atomic bomb.

When asked if Pattinson handed him a horror novel by Stephen King at the conclusion of The Odyssey, Nolan addressed the prospect of an excellent adaptation. He clarified the situation by asking: “Did Rob hand me some horror novel by Stephen King that’ll make an excellent adaptation? Sadly, no, that is not the case.”
