Tottenham break transfer record for Lyon defender Sombath

Tottenham have signed France international defender Alice Sombath from Lyon for a club record transfer fee. The 22-year-old arrives in north London after five seasons with the European giants, during which she made 102 appearances, won five consecutive Première Ligue titles and lifted the 2021-22 Women's Champions League.

The undisclosed fee surpasses the previous record of around £375,000 paid for Norway international Signe Gaupset last year. This escalation in transfer spending highlights a broader shift in the European women's football economy, where English clubs are leveraging deeper commercial revenues to outbid traditional French powerhouses.

Lyon, long the dominant financial force in the women's game, are now facing sustained competition for their top talent. Sombath, who progressed through the Paris FC academy and PSG's youth setup before joining Lyon in 2020, featured in all of France's matches at Euro 2025.

Capable of playing at centre-back or right-back, she has represented France at every age group level. Her move represents a strategic asset acquisition for Tottenham as they attempt to close the gap on Europe's elite.

Tottenham manager Martin Ho framed the signing as a calculated step in the club's long-term strategy. "She's a player we've followed closely for some time and one who fits the profile of what we're building here," Ho said. "Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day."

Ho emphasised that the acquisition is part of a wider infrastructural build. "This is another important addition as we continue building for the future. We can't wait to get started with Alice and welcome her into the group."

Sombath's arrival caps a highly proactive transfer window for Tottenham. The club has secured six early additions, including Shekeira Martinez, Kirsty Hanson, Victoria Pelova, Caitlin Dijkstra and Selma Panengstuen. By finalising their business early, Tottenham are mitigating late-window market inflation and securing squad stability.

Sombath indicated that the increasingly competitive nature of the English market was a major draw. "I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about," she said.
