Beatles brand fuels UK tourism and media investment

Paul McCartney’s surprise appearance on a Liverpool tour bus highlights the enduring economic power of the Beatles brand as new films and a London attraction prepare to draw European tourists and investment.

Paul McCartney surprised fans on Liverpool’s Magical Mystery Tour on July 20, 2026, leaning out of his car at a red light on Hope Street to wave at passengers while on a FaceTime call with Ringo Starr.

“It was surreal,” tour guide Neil Morton said. “I had pulled up at the traffic lights on Hope Street when who should I see – Sir Paul with Ringo on FaceTime! He waved to us and everybody took photos. The passengers could not believe it.” Morton added that while McCartney took time to wave, “nobody really got a chance to speak with him”.

The impromptu encounter underscores the persistent draw of Beatles-related tourism in Liverpool, a sector that continues to anchor the city's cultural economy. The sightseeing tour has operated for years, routing visitors through the childhood homes and early career locations of the band.

McCartney was in the city for a professional engagement rather than a casual drive. He presented a companionship honour to actor Stephen Graham at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), which McCartney co-founded. The institution occupies the former Liverpool Institute school attended by McCartney and George Harrison, and sits adjacent to the Liverpool Art College where John Lennon studied.

The commercial footprint of the band is set to expand significantly across European media markets. A four-film series directed by Sam Mendes is slated for a simultaneous release in April 2028. Each film will profile a different band member, with Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan playing McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, and Starr respectively. The cast also includes Saoirse Ronan, Anna Sawai, Mia McKenna-Bruce, and Aimee Lou Wood.

Further capitalising on the brand, 3 Savile Row in London will open to the public next year. The iconic landmark will host the first official Beatles fan experience, creating a new tourism attraction in the capital.

McCartney released his first album since 2020’s "McCartney III" earlier this year. Titled "The Boys of Dungeon Lane", it features "Home To Us", marking his first duet with Starr. This cultural output, alongside the first-ever Official Global Beatles Day held last month, keeps the band active in the European entertainment economy.
