EU-backed EQT fund in talks to lead Mistral's €3bn round

EU-backed EQT fund in talks to lead Mistral's €3bn round

French artificial intelligence company Mistral is negotiating a €3bn funding round at a €20bn valuation, a landmark deal that would mark the first investment from the EU’s €5bn Scaleup Fund.

French artificial intelligence company Mistral is negotiating a €3bn Series D funding round that would value the business at approximately €20bn. The European Union’s €5bn Scaleup Fund, managed by EQT, is in talks to lead or co-lead the investment.

If the transaction closes, it will represent the inaugural deployment of capital from the €5bn superfund. The fund was established to provide late-stage capital to European technology companies, aiming to prevent the forced relocation of the continent's most promising startups to the United States. A successful lead investment in Mistral would validate the EU's strategy of using state-backed capital to compete with American tech financiers.

Beyond the capital raise, Mistral is fundamentally altering its market positioning. The company is shifting its business model to resemble Palantir, the American enterprise software and defense contractor. Rather than competing solely as a provider of foundational AI models, Mistral is pivoting toward integrated software solutions for governments and large corporations. This transition is directly influencing how investors are pricing the current round.

Moving into the enterprise and defense sectors requires deep integration with existing legacy systems and strict compliance with governmental security standards. By adopting a Palantir-like strategy, Mistral is promising investors a more predictable, software-like recurring revenue model. This approach shifts the focus away from the heavy compute costs associated with pure AI model research, appealing directly to institutional investors seeking steady growth.

A €20bn valuation would cement Mistral among the most valuable technology companies in Europe. Historically, European startups have struggled to secure late-stage funding locally, often resulting in sell-offs to foreign competitors. The involvement of the EU-backed EQT fund signals a coordinated effort to retain technological sovereignty and sets a new financial benchmark for scaling deep tech ventures.
