Light bets on $299 flip phone and subscriptions to cut hardware costs

Light is launching a $299 flip phone and a new subscription model to solve the pricing problem that has limited its minimalist devices to a premium niche.

Light, the maker of minimalist smartphones, has announced the Light Flip, a $299 device that ditches the touch screen in favor of a traditional clamshell design. Co-founders Kaiwei Tang and Joe Hollier are targeting younger consumers who have adopted basic flip phones despite poor build quality.

Pricing has been the primary constraint for the small hardware startup. Selling a device with fewer features at a mass-market price has historically limited the company's addressable market. Its previous touch-screen model, the Light Phone III, costs $799. “They’re describing the flip phones in negative language, but they stick with it, and they feel proud,” Tang said of the Gen Z users the company interviewed.

To reach the lower price point, Light removed the touch screen, NFC reader, and selfie camera, and swapped aluminum for plastic. This cost-cutting also allowed the company to manufacture the device in six colors for the first time. “Just having a yellow phone gets me so jazzed,” Hollier said.

Despite the reduced price, the device runs the same Light Phone OS used in its premium models, including an SDK developer program and basic tools like a calculator and calendar. The hardware features a 2.8-inch OLED internal screen, 5G and 4G LTE connectivity, a 12-megapixel rear camera, and a headphone jack. It lacks an external screen, using only a small notification light.

Beyond cutting hardware costs, Light is testing a financing model that shifts its revenue mix toward recurring income. Through a pilot with carrier Noble Mobile, customers can get the Light Flip for $39 a month on a two-year contract, compared to $59 for the premium model. This subscription approach mimics traditional telecom economics to lower the barrier to entry for consumers.

The device is not expected to ship until April 2027. To prevent preorder cancellations during the long lead time, Light is launching a bi-weekly newsletter program to help users adjust to life without a smartphone. “I think that’s what we’ve always tried to do with Light. We’re anti Big Tech in all these ways, but we’re always trying to show that the other side of life can be really simple and beautiful,” Hollier said.
