LEGO launches premium X-Files set with Gillian Anderson endorsement
LEGO is leveraging fan-designed nostalgia and high-profile celebrity endorsements to drive direct-to-consumer sales for its latest premium release.
LEGO has announced the August 5 release of a new premium set based on the television series The X-Files, priced at $199.99. The launch is accompanied by a promotional campaign featuring Gillian Anderson reprising her iconic role as Agent Scully.
Designated as set #21369, the model originated from the LEGO Ideas platform. It was designed by fan Brent “WetWired” Waller after winning the company’s “Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback!” challenge.
The final product closely mirrors Waller’s original concept, depicting Agent Mulder’s laboratory beneath a forest landscape with a hovering UFO. It includes eight minifigures, featuring the lead agents alongside characters such as the Cigarette Smoking Man, Mr. X, and the Flukeman. Distribution is strictly limited to LEGO.com and brick-and-mortar LEGO Stores.
This restricted availability underscores the company’s continued focus on direct-to-consumer margins. To accelerate early online demand, LEGO is offering a limited-time gift with purchase for orders placed between August 1 and August 10.
Buyers within this window will receive a supplementary Scully’s Lab model. This bonus includes an exclusive minifigure of the character dressed in a lab coat and scrubs, referencing her time at the FBI National Academy laboratory.
Anderson’s participation marks a notable shift, given she famously quit the role in 2018 after being disappointed with the direction of the final season. Her willingness to return for this campaign highlights the unique cultural cachet the brand holds for former television talent.
In an interview, Anderson described the set as a career highlight. She stated, “It’s way at the top, I’d have to say,” adding that while previous crossovers were cool, “this is right up there with The Simpsons.”
For market watchers, the release demonstrates the enduring profitability of the LEGO Ideas pipeline. By transforming fan concepts into premium, officially licensed products, the company minimizes internal research and development costs while securing a built-in consumer base.
