Natural raises $30m to build payment rails for AI agents

A startup called Natural has raised $30 million to build payment infrastructure for autonomous AI agents, a high-risk bet that could reshape how money moves through the global digital economy if machines become primary financial actors.

Startup Natural has closed a $30 million Series A round led by Forerunner Ventures, bringing its total funding past $40 million just 193 days after its founding. The company is building payment infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents, aiming to become the equivalent of Stripe for a future where machines execute financial transactions.

The bet challenges the foundational assumption of modern digital commerce: that a person authorises every payment. Natural is constructing a system where autonomous bots hold FDIC-insured wallets, pay invoices, buy services, and shift funds across currencies without human approval. Chief executive Kahlil Lalji argues the transition is already under way. “We made a bet on agentic payments a year ago, when no one was talking about it,” he said.

To make this viable, the company operates its own ledgering, multi-bank settlement, fraud detection, and compliance systems rather than renting them. Six products are already live, including restricted "vaults" that prevent agents from unilaterally withdrawing funds. With a team of 17, Natural plans to launch 13 products in its first year, including agent-issued debit cards and credit lines for bots.

A market ahead of its time

The immediate financial returns are negligible. One estimate cited by Tech Funding News put global daily transaction volumes for agentic payments at just $28,000 earlier this year. However, the same report projects the market will explode from roughly $7 billion today to $93 billion by 2032. Natural is building at that future scale long before the demand materialises.

The biggest threat to that vision is the incumbent it explicitly seeks to replace. Stripe, valued above $150 billion, is integrating agentic features into its existing platform. Smaller rivals like Ralio and Paygentic are also chasing the space. Forerunner Ventures, which backed early winners like Chime and Glossier, is betting on Natural's speed. Partner Kirsten Green attributed "consumer DNA" to the infrastructure firm.

Giving autonomous systems direct access to corporate funds introduces obvious risks around fraud and compliance. If the guardrails hold and the forecasts prove accurate, Natural's early start mirrors the beginnings of major payment processors. If the technology fails to gain traction, its $40 million in funding provides a substantial runway to wait for the market to arrive.
