Lambchop releases Great Depression track ahead of transatlantic album launch

American band Lambchop has officially released a new single titled "The New World Wave." The track serves as the latest public preview for their forthcoming studio album, "Punching The Clown," which is scheduled for commercial release on August 21.

The new song addresses the severe economic realities of the Great Depression. Its narrative focuses specifically on a family navigating that historical financial crisis. By tackling this subject, the band applies a serious historical lens to periods of widespread economic hardship and public struggle.

Kurt Wagner remains the sole permanent member of the group and provides the lead vocal performance. He recorded the project alongside Andrew Broder, a musician from the act Fog who has been a dedicated collaborator with Wagner since 2021. The recording sessions took place at April Base, the studio facility owned by Justin Vernon.

Vernon contributes banjo instrumentation to the record, while Gayngs frontman Ryan Olson managed the production duties. The sonic landscape features Wagner gravely intoning elliptical character sketches over a delicately folksy soundscape that eventually swells to include a wave of choral voices. This approach continues the lush country-rock style that has defined the group's output for many years, bringing significant gravitas to the material.

The commercial release of "Punching The Clown" utilizes a specific transatlantic distribution strategy. Merge Records will handle the physical and digital rollout across North America.

Meanwhile, City Slang will manage distribution for the rest of the world. This partnership secures the album's availability for European audiences across the continent. This coordinated release follows the earlier sharing of the initial album tracks "Weakened" and "Stella," which helped build public anticipation for the full project.
