Ipswich signs Fatawu for £20m as Premier League economics hit Leicester

Ipswich Town has completed the £20m signing of winger Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City, a transaction that illustrates the severe financial gulf between English football's top tier and its lower divisions.

Leicester City’s sale of the 22-year-old Ghana international reflects the economic reality of relegation. After dropping to the third tier of English football, the club is offloading key squad assets. Fatawu, who scored 16 goals in 100 games since arriving from Sporting in 2023, departs as Leicester prepares for a second season in the third tier.

For newly promoted Ipswich, the spending demonstrates a strategy to leverage Premier League broadcasting revenue. Securing Fatawu on a five-year contract is a calculated investment aimed at top-flight survival. The winger is manager Gary O'Neil's fifth summer addition, following a club-record £26m deal for striker Emersonn from Toulouse. Ipswich also permanently retained defender Cedric Kipre and forward Chuba Akpom after successful loans, and signed goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen from FC Volendam.

The transfer dynamics also highlight the interconnected nature of the European market. To balance its summer outlay, Ipswich is willing to offload winger Jaden Philogene. The 24-year-old has attracted interest from continental sides, believed to include Serie A clubs Bologna and Roma, as well as Portuguese side Benfica. Ipswich will sanction the transfer if a suitable financial offer materializes.

"The ambition the club has is very exciting and I'm looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season," Fatawu said. "After speaking to the manager, I know what the expectation is and I'm looking forward to meeting my team-mates and starting work." He added: "I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I'm excited to play for them and show them what I can do."

Ipswich finished second in the Championship last season and will host Sunderland in their top-flight opener on 22 August.
