Al Hilal beats Roma to sign Summerville from West Ham for €80m
Saudi wealth continues to reshape European football as Al Hilal pays nearly double what Roma offered for the Netherlands winger, leaving the Serie A club to seek alternatives.
West Ham have agreed to sell Crysencio Summerville to Al Hilal for approximately €80m, a fee that dwarfs the €46m bid rejected from Roma just a day earlier.
The Saudi club's offer, worth nearly double Roma's proposal, was swiftly accepted. Roma do not intend to raise their bid to match it and are already pursuing alternatives, with Norway World Cup performers Antonio Nusa and Andreas Schjelderup among their targets.
For West Ham, the deal illustrates the financial mechanics of relegation. Dropping to the Championship typically forces clubs to sell their most valuable assets, and the Hammers have now done so decisively. Combined with the £85m sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham, the Summerville transfer will take West Ham's summer income past £150m.
A market increasingly dictated by Saudi spending
The episode underlines a recurring dynamic in the European transfer market. Manchester United had shown initial interest in Summerville, but those discussions never advanced beyond an exploratory stage because any move was conditional on first offloading Marcus Rashford.
When Al Hilal entered the frame, the financial gap between a European suitor and a Gulf-backed club became stark. Paying nearly twice what a Serie A side was prepared to offer demonstrates the extent to which Saudi Pro League teams can set prices that European competitors struggle to match.
Summerville, 24, scored seven goals and contributed five assists in 34 appearances for West Ham last season. His standing rose further at the 2026 World Cup, where he scored twice and set up two more across four matches for the Netherlands.
The €80m fee would make the winger West Ham's third-highest sale, surpassed only by Declan Rice and Fernandes. For Roma, the arithmetic is blunt: the player they wanted was priced beyond what they were willing to pay, and they must now look elsewhere.
