Manchester City extend Phil Foden contract until 2030
Phil Foden has committed his future to Manchester City until 2030, providing the club with a crucial anchor of homegrown value as it navigates a post-Guardiola transition.
Manchester City have signed Phil Foden to a new four-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030. The 26-year-old forward has spent his entire career at the club since joining as an eight-year-old.
The contract is a significant statement of intent from a club undergoing a profound reshaping. With the departures of John Stones and Bernardo Silva, Foden now stands as City’s most decorated player. He holds 17 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
Securing a homegrown player who swept the Football Writers’ Association and Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year awards in 2023-24 protects a highly valuable asset from the external transfer market. Yet the long-term commitment is arguably more of a calculated bet on a recovery than a straightforward reward for past success. Foden’s output and influence deteriorated sharply last season.
He lost his starting place under Pep Guardiola and was subsequently left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad. His decline was marked publicly; after a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on 4 March, he started only two league games. He was also substituted after 58 minutes of the 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Southampton.
Foden later disclosed that off-field issues had compounded his struggles, alongside an ankle injury sustained from a Casemiro tackle during a goalless April draw at Manchester United. Despite this downturn, the club’s new leadership has moved aggressively to secure his services. Director of football Hugo Viana and incoming manager Enzo Maresca have clearly signalled their belief that Foden can return to his peak.
Maresca previously served as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. Foden expressed optimism that the Italian’s possession-based philosophy will facilitate a resurgence. “You can tell by the first few sessions that I’ve done with him – the way he likes to play out from the back and play a lot of possession-based – it suits my game really well,” Foden said.
Viana framed the contract as a continuation of a long-term project centred on the academy. “He is a unique talent, and his creativity is a joy to watch. None of what he has achieved would be possible without the focus, dedication and humility to work hard in every moment and absorb all of the knowledge available to him through our coaches and players,” Viana said.
For his part, Foden remains focused on adding to his trophy haul. “It’s not lost on me that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a historic period with so many titles won, but we’re always looking to the future and trying to win more,” he said.
