Barcelona breaks transfer record with €1.5m Kerolin deal
Barcelona is paying a record €1.5m to sign Manchester City forward Kerolin, a financial counter-strike that highlights the growing economic rivalry between the English and Spanish women's football markets.
FC Barcelona is close to signing Brazilian forward Kerolin from Manchester City for a fee of €1.5m. The proposed transfer would smash Barcelona's previous record of €470,000, paid for Keira Walsh in 2022, by more than 200 per cent. It also establishes a new financial benchmark as the largest transfer fee ever received by a Women's Super League club.
This record outlay is a deliberate financial counter-strike by the Spanish champions. After securing a continental quadruple last season, including the Champions League, Barcelona watched their core being dismantled by English rivals. Two-time Ballon d'Or Feminin winner Alexia Putellas and defender Mapi Leon both joined London City Lionesses. Defender Ona Batlle also opted for Arsenal, a clear signal that the WSL's commercial appeal is growing and threatening to upset the established hierarchy in Catalonia.
A premium asset
Barcelona's willingness to pay such a premium for Kerolin underscores the rapidly escalating market value of elite attacking talent. The Brazilian still had two years remaining on her Manchester City contract, having only arrived at the club in January last year. City had just secured their first WSL title since 2016 and were under no immediate sporting or financial pressure to sell their forward.
Kerolin scored nine goals in 15 WSL games during that title-winning campaign. While that absolute tally was surpassed by Manchester City teammates Khadija Shaw, with 21 goals, and Vivianne Miedema, with 10, Kerolin's efficiency metrics justify her price tag. She ranked fifth in the league for goals per 90 minutes, second in assists per 90, and fourth in big chances converted. An injury suffered in October ultimately capped her overall statistical output.
Shifting market dynamics
For the English league, the €1.5m fee, equivalent to £1.28m, surpasses the previous record of £1m generated by Liverpool for Olivia Smith's move to Arsenal last summer. It proves WSL clubs can now extract massive capital returns on player assets, even as Spanish giants flex their financial muscle. Barcelona have already lost forward Salma Paralluelo this summer. Securing Kerolin represents a necessary statement of intent to ensure the club retains its allure and competitive superiority in Europe.
