The Mary Pit Head in Fife, Scotland

The Kingdom of Fife has a rich mining history, but nowadays, most of it is gone. The concrete frame of the No 2 Pit at Mary Colliery, informally known as "Big Mary" (to differentiate from "Wee Mary", a nearby competitor), remains one of only two reminders of the coal mines in this area, standing 80 foot high. Adjacent to the structure is a small outdoor exhibit which showcases equipment from the time, such as coal-cutters, hydraulic roof supports, and carts (both for coal and for miners) that were used in the pit.
