Manchester Super Giants dominate London Spirit to top The Hundred table
Ryana MacDonald-Gay’s four-wicket haul propelled Manchester Super Giants to a commanding seven-wicket victory over London Spirit, elevating them to the top of The Hundred standings on net run-rate.
Manchester Super Giants secured a dominant seven-wicket victory over London Spirit at Lord’s on Thursday, bowling the hosts out for 80 before chasing the target in just 40 minutes. The comprehensive win propels Meg Lanning’s side to the top of The Hundred table on net run-rate.
Ryana MacDonald-Gay earned player-of-the-match honours after claiming four wickets to dismantle the Spirit batting lineup. Her performance anchored a broader bowling effort that dismissed the home side with nine deliveries to spare.
London Spirit struggled from the outset after being put in to bat. Grace Ballinger and Maitlan Brown removed Grace Harris for four and Amy Jones for a duck inside the first eight deliveries.
Wickets continued to fall in clusters for the hosts. MacDonald-Gay dismissed Marie Kelly and later combined with Lanning to remove South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp for 17.
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone capitalized on the pressure, bowling Deandra Dottin for four. The Spirit collapse deepened when Lanning and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh executed a run-out to dismiss England vice-captain Charlie Dean for 14.
MacDonald-Gay completed her four-wicket haul by hitting Nadine de Klerk’s stumps and forcing Katie George to edge behind to Ghosh. The disciplined bowling restricted London Spirit to a total that required minimal effort to overcome.
"That was a mega start from our girls," Ecclestone said. She noted the pitch offered spin and variable bounce, praising the team's execution despite having limited time together.
In reply, the Super Giants maintained their momentum. Smriti Mandhana scored 17 and Lanning added 21, building a 33-run partnership off 28 deliveries before Kapp trapped Mandhana lbw.
Kapp briefly threatened a comeback, dismissing Grace Scrivens for a golden duck and later removing Lanning. However, the required total was already well within reach.
Paige Scholfield and Richa Ghosh steadied the innings with unbeaten scores of 22 and 15 respectively. Their unbroken partnership sealed the seven-wicket victory without further alarm.
"The bowlers at the top really set up the game for us, taking the early wickets and I felt coming in and sticking to my plan worked really well," MacDonald-Gay said. She emphasized that executing their basics with confidence was the key to the dominant performance.
The Super Giants will look to maintain this momentum as The Hundred continues. The tournament’s next double-header features Birmingham Phoenix against Trent Rockets at Edgbaston.
