City completes £116m Anderson deal as Forest nets heavy profit

Manchester City has confirmed the £116m signing of England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. The 23-year-old agreed to a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, including an option for an additional 12 months. The deal was finalised this week after Anderson returned from the World Cup, where he helped England secure a third-place finish.

The transfer underscores the severe financial asymmetry within English football's top tier. Nottingham Forest paid just £35m to acquire Anderson from Newcastle two years ago. His sale represents a substantial capital gain, providing a significant boost to Forest's balance sheet and demonstrating how mid-tier Premier League clubs rely on player trading to manage their finances.

For Manchester City, the heavy outlay reflects the escalating cost of securing proven domestic talent in an inflationary transfer market. Director of football Hugo Viana described Anderson as "one of the outstanding young midfield talents in world football" who "can become a complete midfielder." The investment signals the club's intent to maintain its dominant position under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Anderson emerged through Newcastle's academy and made 55 first-team appearances before moving to the East Midlands. During his two years at Forest, he played 92 times, rapidly transforming his market value to attract a nine-figure fee. His quick ascent to becoming a key figure in Thomas Tuchel's England squad ultimately validated Forest's initial £35m investment.

Upon signing, Anderson made his commercial and sporting ambitions clear. He stated he was "over the moon" to join "one of the biggest clubs in the world" and noted City are "built to win trophies and compete at the very top of the game." He also dismissed reported interest from Manchester United, declaring that "for as long as I've known Manchester, City have been the kings of Manchester."

The financial and sporting rivalry between the two Manchester clubs will be tested early in the new campaign. City are scheduled to face United at Old Trafford on September 13. Anderson, who grew up idolising former City star Kevin De Bruyne, said he "can't wait to be involved in something like that."

"I'm only 23, so I've got plenty of time to get to my best levels," Anderson said. "I'm definitely not there yet and there's more to come from me."
