AC Milan extends Luka Modric contract by one year following fifth-place Serie A finish
AC Milan has secured the services of 40-year-old Luka Modric for another season as the club attempts to recover from a disappointing domestic campaign under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
AC Milan midfielder Luka Modric has signed a one-year contract extension with the Italian club. The 40-year-old, who turns 41 in September, initially joined last summer on a one-year deal containing an option to extend following his departure from Real Madrid.
The retention of the veteran player signals the club's intent to stabilize its squad after a difficult domestic campaign. Milan finished fifth in Serie A and exited the Coppa Italia at the last-16 stage, a performance the midfielder publicly acknowledged fell short of collective targets.
"I am thrilled to stay at AC Milan, where you made me feel welcomed and loved from the very first day," Modric stated regarding the new agreement. He described the upcoming campaign as a new challenge and a project he believes in, emphasizing his immense desire to bounce back.
"I'm ready to continue to give everything again for this shirt and I'm so proud to keep wearing these colours," he added. The midfielder also expressed eagerness to return to San Siro and feel the roar of the supporters as the team prepares for the new season.
Modric will now operate under Ruben Amorim, the former Manchester United manager who took over from the sacked Massimiliano Allegri in June. Club officials highlighted the Croatian's influence in a statement, noting he has brought experience and quality to the midfield with humility and great passion.
The extension keeps a highly decorated player in Italy for at least another year. Modric previously secured the 2018 Ballon d'Or, six Champions League titles and four La Liga championships during a 13-year tenure at the Bernabeu, alongside a four-year stint making 160 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur.
His renewed club commitment follows immediate international duty. Modric recently competed in his fifth World Cup, where Croatia was eliminated in the last 32 by Portugal. This ended a notable tournament run for the nation, which had previously finished as runners-up and third under his captaincy.
