UK band Sleep Token delivers first US platinum for indie label Spinefarm
A British group has achieved a rare million-selling heavy music record in America, illustrating how genre-blending and streaming can propel an independent act into major-label arena touring.
The British band Sleep Token has earned a US platinum certification for its 2023 album, "Take Me Back to Eden," marking the first time the independent label Spinefarm has reached the one million equivalent unit milestone.
The certification underscores a notable anomaly in the modern heavy music market, where million-selling albums have become exceedingly rare. The last metal record to achieve platinum status in the US was Metallica’s 2016 release, which was certified in 2017.
Sleep Token achieved this by fusing progressive metal with pop and contemporary R&B, a strategy that translated into over 2 billion global streams. It was the most-streamed metal album on Spotify in 2023. This streaming velocity caused the band’s monthly listener count to surge from roughly 300,000 at launch to over 1.5 million, a figure they have maintained.
For the European music business, the album represents a case study in the modern independent-to-major pipeline. "Take Me Back to Eden" was the final release in Sleep Token's three-album contract with Spinefarm. The commercial proof of concept established by the record directly facilitated the band's subsequent move to the major label RCA for their 2025 album, "Even in Arcadia."
The financial implications of that streaming growth extended seamlessly into the touring economy. The audience built during the "Take Me Back to Eden" cycle allowed Sleep Token to launch a 16-date headlining arena tour across the US for their follow-up record, a significant scale-up in live revenue potential.
The band's transition to the major label system has so far validated the RCA investment. Earlier this year, "Even in Arcadia" was certified gold for 500,000 equivalent units sold. The band is currently capitalising on this sustained demand with a surprise instrumental version of the album released in May, with a physical vinyl edition scheduled to hit the market on August 7.
