Slipknot founder consolidates creative and commercial ventures under new digital portal
M. Shawn Crahan has launched a centralized website for his music, media and whiskey brand, illustrating a direct-to-consumer approach to managing personal intellectual property.
M. Shawn Crahan, the founding percussionist of the metal band Slipknot, has launched a centralized digital portal to house his diverse creative and commercial enterprises. The 56-year-old Iowa-born musician introduced theclown.com alongside a new musical side project, O' Day Monster, and its debut single, Un Life.
The newly established website serves as a one-stop hub for Crahan’s expanding portfolio. It aggregates direct links to his various musical side-projects, his podcast The Electric Theater, and his consumer goods venture, lipknot No. 9 Iowa Whiskey.
This digital consolidation reflects a strategic shift toward the direct management of personal intellectual property. By controlling this specific digital real estate, Crahan aims to present his creative output and commercial products without intermediary filtering or traditional media gatekeeping.
In a statement published in a section of the site labelled Thoughts, Crahan described the platform as a dedicated space for unedited expression. He noted that it has historically been difficult to share these expressions mainly because of time, but he now feels at a crossing where he must reveal what has been hidden behind the curtain.
The scope of the intellectual property hosted on the portal is broad. Crahan listed activities ranging from painting, directing, and 3-D animation to coding, video game level creation, and the use of modular synths. The debut release for O' Day Monster notably features an AI-created video, diverging significantly from the heavy metal sound of his primary band.
For established artists, maintaining direct ownership of digital platforms and ancillary brands offers greater control over both creative direction and revenue streams. Crahan emphasized his desire to build something he could conduct and drive, highlighting the value of autonomous brand management in the modern entertainment landscape.
He described the new musical venture as a way to bring the battle of "me against me" to life, relying on close friends to help give his words the required conviction. The platform is designed to be a resting place for these time-stamped creative outputs, with Crahan acknowledging that it will take considerable work to fully populate the site.
