Anthropic adds app integrations to Claude voice mode to challenge OpenAI

Anthropic has expanded its Claude voice assistant to integrate with major workplace applications, marking a strategic push into enterprise productivity that contrasts with rival OpenAI’s conversational focus.

Anthropic announced on Thursday that it is upgrading the voice mode of its Claude artificial intelligence assistant. The update allows the system to interact directly with external workplace applications, moving the technology beyond simple conversational exchanges.

Users can now direct the voice assistant to update calendar slots in Google Calendar, draft messages in Gmail, or generate documents in Notion. The system also connects with Slack and Canva to streamline routine professional tasks.

The company stated that the voice interface will default to the fastest version of whichever model the user last selected in text chat. This gives professionals access to the more capable Opus and Sonnet models, a significant upgrade from last year’s Haiku-only release which struggled with complex requests.

Anthropic highlighted that these enhancements support longer, more substantive interactions. Employees can use the tool to rehearse client pitches, brainstorm market research, or receive feedback on their communication style.

This workflow integration represents a clear point of differentiation from OpenAI. While OpenAI recently refined the conversational style of its own voice mode, it has not yet enabled similar cross-application task execution.

The update also builds on multilingual capabilities introduced in beta earlier this year. Users can speak in English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, or Spanish for Spain and Latin America, though the language must be specified manually.

The new voice mode is available in beta to all users across platforms. However, individuals on the free tier will be restricted to the Haiku model and limited to a single connected application.

Notably, Anthropic did not alter the underlying voice model or disclose details about its voice stack. Consequently, users may not experience conversational refinements such as improved interruption handling, an area where OpenAI has recently focused its development.

For European businesses evaluating artificial intelligence investments, this shift signals a maturing market. The competitive edge is increasingly defined by practical software integration rather than standalone conversational novelty, a factor that will heavily influence corporate procurement decisions across the continent.
