FIFA probes Argentina after Spain coach slams final conduct
Spain's World Cup victory has been overshadowed by a FIFA disciplinary probe into Argentina's post-match conduct, drawing sharp criticism from Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente.
Spain secured the World Cup trophy, but the immediate aftermath has been dominated by controversy. FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into Argentina's behaviour following the final whistle at MetLife Stadium.
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of the Spanish national team, strongly condemned the actions of several Argentine players. In an interview with Spanish public broadcaster TVE, he labelled the post-match conduct "intolerable and unacceptable".
The tension emerged during the closing stages of the match, resulting in the dismissal of Argentina's Enzo Fernández. De la Fuente contrasted this behaviour with his own squad, praising his players for maintaining their composure in the face of what he described as "aggression and provocation".
"At the time I didn't realise, because I was celebrating with other people, hugging team-mates," de la Fuente said. "In any case, I find it intolerable and unacceptable from players of that calibre, whom I had been praising in the days before and who have a magnificent coach. It cannot be allowed."
For Spain, the triumph represents a significant moment of national unity and public morale. De la Fuente noted the widespread public investment in the team, stating that the whole country's support had been felt "even from afar" and calling it "a huge source of pride to be Spanish."
Looking back at the tournament, de la Fuente emphasised the logistical and physical hurdles his squad overcame. He pointed to a gruelling travel schedule of 24,000 kilometres, combined with high humidity and minimal rest, as the primary challenges beyond the opposition itself.
The coach reserved special praise for Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder who won the tournament's Golden Ball. To doubt Rodri, de la Fuente argued, is "an insult to footballing intelligence." He also highlighted the maturation of young star Lamine Yamal, particularly regarding his willingness to sacrifice for the collective.
Looking forward, de la Fuente noted that leading Spain at the 2030 World Cup would represent "the greatest source of pride for any coach." However, he stressed that his immediate focus remains firmly on Spain's upcoming fixtures in September and October.
