Genesis founders oversee deluxe reissue of 1969 debut album

The comprehensive reissue of the band’s first record highlights the enduring commercial strategy of premium physical media in the European music market.

Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford have reunited with original guitarist Anthony Phillips to oversee a comprehensive reissue of their 1969 debut album, From Genesis To Revelation. The founding members filmed reminiscences at London’s Air Studios earlier this year to mark the project, which is scheduled for release by the label Cherry Red on October 9.

The release strategy underscores the ongoing commercial viability of premium physical music products for legacy catalogues. The project will be available as a remastered two-CD edition, a double vinyl set, and a deluxe five-disc box set comprising four CDs and a Blu-ray. This multi-tiered approach allows the label to capture both casual listeners and dedicated audiophiles willing to invest in high-resolution physical formats.

Stephen W Tayler produced a new stereo mix that prioritizes the band's core performances over the orchestral arrangements featured on the original release. The Blu-ray component delivers the album in 96 kHz / 24-bit Dolby Atmos, 5.1 Surround Sound, and stereo. Furthermore, the five-disc set includes remastered original mono and stereo mixes, associated singles, rare recordings, and a disc of 1967 and 1968 demos. Four of these demos are previously unreleased and feature new mixes by Tayler.

Vinyl buyers will receive a bonus 12-inch EP containing new mixes of A Winter's Tale, One Eyed Hound, Image Blown Out, and a previously unreleased version of Visions Of Angels. The deluxe box set also targets the collectors' market by including exclusive video content of Banks, Gabriel, and Rutherford reviewing the new mixes at Air Studios. A 68-page illustrated book accompanies the physical release, containing an extensive essay with contributions from all four founding members.

For the European music market, such catalog reissues represent a distinct commercial strategy. By offering extensive archival material and high-resolution formats, labels can monetize legacy assets while satisfying a dedicated consumer base that values tangible media.
