Hole's first three albums return on vinyl via UMe with zoetrope editions
Universal Music's catalog arm is reissuing Hole's 1990s catalogue in multiple vinyl formats, a sign of the continued commercial pull of physical music for heritage acts.
Hole's first three studio albums will be repressed on vinyl and released on September 18, with formats ranging from standard black pressings to animated "zoetrope" LPs and limited colour editions timed for Record Store Day on October 23.
The reissues cover Pretty on the Inside (1991), Live Through This (1994) and Celebrity Skin (1998). Guitarist and co-founder Eric Erlandson supervised the project for UMe, the catalog division of Universal Music Group.
Pretty on the Inside will be bundled with a remastered 12-inch single of "Teenage Whore," backed by the B-sides "Burn Black" and "Drown Soda." Both B-sides will also appear on streaming platforms for the first time when the record ships.
A format strategy in three stages
The second and third albums will be available remastered on standard black vinyl or as zoetrope LPs, which use a printed animation loop on the label that appears to move when the record spins. The animations are drawn from the original music videos, according to the press release.
Colour vinyl variants of all three titles are reserved for Record Store Day on October 23, giving independent record shops a five-week window of exclusivity after the September general release. The staggered schedule is designed to drive two separate purchasing events rather than one.
What it signals for the catalog business
UMe's handling of the Hole reissue follows a broader pattern at major labels: mine the back catalogue, add a physical-format premium, and parcel the release across multiple retail events to maximise unit sales per title. Vinyl pricing for special editions typically sits well above the equivalent digital or streaming revenue per listener.
For European independent record shops, the Record Store Day colour variants represent a foot-traffic draw in late October, a period that otherwise lacks the seasonal lift of the November-December gift-buying rush.
No pricing or pressing quantities were disclosed in the announcement.
