Chelsea shift recruitment strategy with move for veteran striker Danny Welbeck
The Premier League club is targeting experienced players like the 35-year-old forward to correct a youth-heavy recruitment model that resulted in a tenth-place finish last season.
Chelsea are finalising a transfer for 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, who has been granted permission to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge. The forward is expected to join the squad for their pre-season tour in Hong Kong next week ahead of a two-year contract.
This move marks a distinct shift in recruitment strategy for new manager Xabi Alonso. Over the past two seasons, Chelsea have operated with the youngest squad in the Premier League, a focus on youth that the club now views as a hindrance to consistently challenging for major honours.
The strategic pivot follows a disappointing campaign where the club finished tenth and secured no trophies. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali recently acknowledged the issue, stating that the club’s recruitment model required a "tweak".
Welbeck’s arrival is part of a broader push to inject seniority into the roster. Chelsea have submitted an offer for 34-year-old Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, aiming to reunite him with Alonso following their 2024 Bundesliga title win at Bayer Leverkusen.
Discussions are also ongoing to secure 36-year-old Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. Alongside these veteran targets, the club has added 26-year-old centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace on a six-year deal, pending official confirmation.
The squad rebuild also includes younger but established talent. Morgan Rogers, 24, arrived from Aston Villa earlier this month for a club-record £117m, while 21-year-old full-back Marco Palestra has been recruited from Atalanta.
Welbeck brings substantial top-flight pedigree to the attacking line. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has scored 90 goals in 400 Premier League appearances and has been Brighton’s leading league scorer since joining on a free transfer from Watford in 2021.
Integrating Welbeck will leave Chelsea with six senior strikers, as the club looks to build its forward line around him and Joao Pedro. This congestion is likely to trigger departures, with Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu all available for loan or permanent sale.
Additionally, Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, acquired this summer from sister club Strasbourg, remains in the mix to be part of the final squad.
