European tourist arrivals rise four percent as travellers shift toward emerging destinations

Passenger traffic and hotel occupancy across Europe continue to grow despite rising travel costs, signaling resilient demand and new opportunities for airlines and hospitality investors targeting culturally rich, non-traditional markets.

European passenger traffic grew 2.3 percent and hotel occupancy rose 2 percent between May 2025 and April 2026 compared to the previous year. The continent welcomed more than 130 million international tourists in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 4 percent increase.

This steady expansion demonstrates the resilience of the European travel sector amid soaring jet fuel prices and elevated consumer costs. For airlines and hospitality investors, the data highlights a critical shift in demand away from traditional tourism powerhouses toward culturally rich city breaks and nature-led travel.

While Spain remains the most searched and booked destination, Central and Eastern Europe are capturing the fastest growth. Czechia recorded an 18 percent year-on-year increase in bookings, leading a trend that also saw Iceland grow by 11 percent.

Hotel occupancy in Czechia has rebounded to more than 60 percent following a slump at the start of 2026. This surge reflects a broader traveller appetite for distinct experiences and seasonal balance across Northern and Central Europe.

International demand is being driven by significant growth from specific origin markets. Japanese travellers drove a 19 percent increase in bookings to Europe, following a 62 percent spike in search volume. This outpaced Denmark and Egypt, which saw booking growth of 11 percent and 8 percent respectively.

Expanding Air Connectivity

To capture this demand, the Southern and Mediterranean region is aggressively expanding its air connectivity. Approximately 1,100 new flight routes have launched over the past year, including 96 from Germany and 58 from France.

Emerging links now connect Slovakia to Spain, Ethiopia to Portugal, and China to Greece. Consequently, air passenger volume and scheduled seats to the Southern and Mediterranean region are projected to reach almost 70 million during the July and August peak.

Booking behavior in this region remains bifurcated, offering distinct revenue management opportunities. While 53 percent of trips are booked at least one month in advance, 29 percent are made within two weeks of departure.

This substantial last-minute demand creates immediate space for flash promotions, weekend packages, and dynamic pricing strategies aimed at flexible travellers.

The Mature Traveller Demographic

Adults aged 46 to 65 now represent approximately 30 percent of travel demand across the continent, making them the largest single demographic. This share increases further in major hubs like London, Paris, and Madrid.

This mature, high-spending audience is actively seeking authentic local experiences, cultural discovery, and wellbeing offerings. Their preferences are reshaping hospitality investment strategies, aligning capital with premium cultural experiences while younger demographics continue to support a multigenerational visitor mix.
