London AI founder pitches smart mirror to King Charles at St James’s Palace

Magic AI’s Varun Bhanot secured the King’s Award for Enterprise, highlighting how early-stage European tech founders can leverage royal recognition to build brand credibility.

London-based artificial intelligence startup Magic AI has been awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category. Founder Varun Bhanot recently collected the prize at St James’s Palace, where he had only a few seconds to describe his company’s smart fitness mirror to King Charles.

The brief encounter underscores the unique branding opportunities available to European startups that secure royal endorsements. Bhanot recalled the high-pressure environment, noting the unusual discomfort of wearing a suit and tie in 31-degree heat.

Bhanot explained that the company builds technology to help make people fitter. The King reportedly replied by asking, "Is that good AI?" demonstrating a passing familiarity with the sector.

For founders navigating similar high-stakes networking environments, Bhanot emphasizes the need for extreme brevity. He advises that entrepreneurs have even less time with a monarch than in a standard elevator pitch, requiring them to focus on what is genuinely interesting to the listener rather than delivering a standard sales script.

Strategic positioning and support also play a critical role in these encounters. Bhanot credited a nearby wingman with breaking the ice by noticing the King holding a Pimm’s, despite the drink not being on the official menu. He also noted that following a dull pitch about concrete vacuum services inadvertently made his own health technology sound more appealing by comparison.

The practical value of such interactions extends beyond a brief conversation. Magic AI works with celebrity instructors and can now feature the King’s Awards seal on its packaging. As Bhanot observed, this endorsement means the monarch is technically an ambassador for the brand, providing a tangible asset for customer trust and market differentiation.

For the broader European tech ecosystem, this highlights how non-dilutive recognition can serve as a powerful catalyst for growth. Startups often chase venture capital, but institutional validation from established national figures can offer equally valuable leverage when competing for consumer attention and market share.
