French electronic music pioneer Kavinsky dies in Paris at age 50
The death of the producer behind the global hit 'Nightcall' marks the loss of a defining figure in France’s cultural export sector and the influential French Touch movement.
Vincent Belorgey, the French electronic music producer known professionally as Kavinsky, was found dead in his Paris residence on 28 July at approximately 10:30pm local time. He was 50 years old. Authorities were alerted to the scene by a neighbour who had not seen the artist for several days.
French media report that the suspected cause of death is a stroke, following complaints of severe headaches in the preceding days. Paris police have opened an investigation to determine the exact origin of the death, though initial responders noted no suspicious elements at the location.
Kavinsky’s passing removes a cornerstone of the French Touch electronic music movement, a cultural export that has generated substantial economic value and global soft power for France over the past three decades. His signature track, 'Nightcall', achieved renewed commercial momentum recently after his live performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony.
That Olympic performance propelled the track to become the most Shazamed song in a single day, demonstrating the enduring commercial viability of his catalogue.
