Russian strikes kill seven in Ukraine as Poland scrambles jets to secure airspace
A fresh wave of Russian missile and drone attacks has killed at least seven people and triggered defensive responses in neighbouring Poland, underscoring the urgent strain on European air defence capabilities and regional stability.
Russia launched a widespread overnight campaign of ballistic missiles and drones across Ukraine, killing at least seven people and prompting neighbouring Poland to scramble fighter jets in defence of its airspace. The assault targeted multiple regions, validating warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding an impending large-scale offensive.
In the central city of Kryvyi Rih, a missile strike on a private home in a nearby village killed two girls, aged five and twelve, and left eight others injured. Kyiv saw one fatality and fires at non-residential buildings in the Sviatoshynskyi and Obolon districts caused by falling debris from intercepted projectiles, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The western city of Lviv, situated close to the Polish border, sustained damage to two apartment buildings with at least six people injured. The proximity of the strikes to Nato territory forced Poland to place its air defence systems on high alert and deploy aircraft to safeguard its skies.
This escalation highlights the critical vulnerability of Ukraine’s airspace and the mounting pressure on Western allies to supply advanced interception systems. Zelensky has urgently appealed to the United States and European partners for additional air defence missiles to counter the sustained aerial bombardment.
Internal and Regional Strains
Compounding the operational challenges, the Ukrainian air force reported the crash of an F-16 fighter jet during a frontline interception mission. The pilot ejected safely and is receiving medical treatment, but the incident raises questions about the operational readiness of Western-supplied aircraft.
Meanwhile, internal restructuring within Ukraine’s defence establishment continues to face friction. Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated his recent dismissal stemmed directly from his attempts to overhaul military procurement and introduce a transparent tender system, which he said provoked "significant dissatisfaction" among entrenched officials.
The conflict’s geopolitical footprint is also expanding beyond Europe’s borders. Tensions escalated after Ukraine reportedly attacked an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, killing one sailor. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned the act "cannot go unanswered" during recent discussions with EU diplomat Kaja Kallas and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
In a separate development reflecting Moscow’s tightening grip on digital infrastructure, Russia’s Federal Security Service has added 41-year-old Telegram founder Pavel Durov to an international wanted list, accusing him of aiding terrorist activities. Durov dismissed the charges as an attack on free expression, signalling ongoing friction between digital platforms and state security apparatuses.
