Eddie Howe leaves Newcastle as Saudi owners target Al Ahli coach Matthias Jaissle

Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United head coach after nearly five years, ending his tenure just 25 days before the Premier League season opener against Liverpool. This move concludes 48 hours of talks with the club hierarchy, although the manager initiated the departure process several weeks prior.

The exit highlights the operational friction within the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s multi-club ownership model. Newcastle is currently in advanced talks to replace Howe with 38-year-old Matthias Jaissle, who currently manages Al Ahli, another franchise controlled by the sovereign wealth fund.

Howe’s resignation is directly linked to the aggressive liquidation of the club's highest-value sporting assets. The ownership has sanctioned the sales of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Alexander Isak, with the striker moving to Liverpool for a British-record £125m last summer.

Further roster instability surrounds captain Bruno Guimaraes, who is heavily pursued by Arsenal. While the club has deployed £83.5m on younger prospects including Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, and Ewen Jaouen, they failed to secure Johan Manzambi, who chose Aston Villa.

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie confirmed the departure was unrelated to a recent 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City. Howe concluded he has taken the project as far as possible and plans to take a break from football, with no acrimony reported.

Pundit Jamie Carragher suggested the manager lacked the energy to rebuild the squad over another two or three years. Carragher noted that managing the intense demands of a major football club takes a significant toll, but praised Howe as an absolute icon for winning the League Cup and reaching the Champions League twice.

Addressing the Guimaraes situation in his final remarks, Howe refused to guarantee the midfielder's future. "We're not in control of that," Howe stated, adding that the player is also not in control of the external forces dictating his transfer market value.

The sudden managerial transition and severe squad depletion have raised immediate questions regarding the club's market valuation and competitive standing. Former player Jay Bothroyd warned that replacing established Premier League stars with unproven talent could ultimately drag Newcastle into a relegation battle this season.

Jaissle is expected to take charge of the pre-season training camp in La Manga once appointed. Kieran McKenna and Antonio Conte were also considered during the search, but the club is hopeful of finalizing the internal transfer from Al Ahli within 24 hours.
