Dundee manager Pressley signs new deal as club targets sustainable growth model
Steven Pressley has committed his future to Dundee as the Scottish Premiership club navigates a major squad overhaul and aims to replicate the sustainable development model of Motherwell.
Steven Pressley has signed a new contract with Dundee, believed to be a one-year rolling deal, as the head coach prepares for a transitional season at Dens Park. The 52-year-old, who replaced Tony Docherty in June 2025 and secured an eighth-place finish last term, described the extension as the correct move, though he warned of considerable difficulties ahead.
The club is currently undergoing a substantial roster reconstruction. Defenders Luke Graham and Billy Koumetio have departed for Stoke City and Charlton Athletic, while goalkeeper Jon McCracken joined Bradford City. Additionally, key loan players including Yan Dhanda, Cameron Congreve, and Tony Yogane have returned to their parent clubs.
Pressley was candid about the operational difficulties of replacing such influential personnel. He noted that while new signings have been brought in with confidence, integrating them will require considerable time and patience from supporters, mirroring the adjustment period seen last season.
Beyond the immediate sporting challenges, the manager outlined a clear strategic vision for the organisation's development. With the backing of managing director John Nelms, Pressley pointed to Motherwell as a blueprint for sustainable success, citing their ability to develop talent internally, command high transfer fees, and achieve European qualification.
The contract extension also resolves a difficult personal situation for the manager. After spending the past year living apart from his wife, Pressley emphasized the human toll of managerial isolation, noting that her impending relocation to Scotland was a vital factor in his decision to stay.
Dundee will face an immediate test of their rebuilt squad when they open their Premiership campaign away to Celtic on Monday night. Pressley acknowledged the historical difficulty of the fixture, noting Celtic have not lost a home opening-day match in nearly 76 years, but insisted his players are prepared for the challenge.
