England overcomes early deficit to reach Commonwealth Games netball semi-finals

England overcame an early deficit against South Africa to reach the Commonwealth Games netball semi-finals, keeping their quest for a first home-soil medal alive.

England defeated South Africa 58-54 in a decisive group match to secure a place in the netball semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Both teams required a victory to advance to the final four, making the fixture a crucial encounter at the OVO Hydro.

The host nation faced a difficult opening period as South African goal shooter Elmere van der Berg scored 16 goals from 19 attempts. This strong start gave South Africa a 17-11 advantage after the first quarter and temporarily silenced the home crowd.

Coach Anna Stembridge introduced Halimat Adio and Funmi Fadoju, a tactical shift that tightened the English defense. The substitutions altered the momentum of the match, allowing England to reduce the deficit to a single point by half-time.

"Shout out to Halimat Adio. She was unreal in that second quarter. So proud of her to bring us that energy and get us back in the game when we needed it," captain Francesca Williams said.

England initiated a strong offensive push early in the third quarter, scoring five consecutive goals to establish a 35-30 lead. They maintained this momentum to take a 45-41 advantage into the final period of the match.

Williams noted the intense environment leading up to the fixture. "We have been under pressure all week to perform so for us to finish out a game like that and ride the wave of goal for goal in the last quarter and come out on top, I'm so proud."

The victory preserves England’s perfect record of reaching the semi-finals since netball was introduced to the Commonwealth Games in 1998. It also provides a crucial boost for Stembridge, who assumed the head coaching role just four months ago following the resignation of Jess Thirlby.

Despite their consistent presence in the latter stages of the tournament, England has never secured a netball medal when the Commonwealth Games are hosted in the United Kingdom. The team is now pursuing their second overall Commonwealth gold medal.

England will face New Zealand in the first semi-final on Saturday morning. The other semi-final will feature Australia against Jamaica, with the bronze and gold medal matches scheduled for Sunday.
