Paramount+ Orders Six-Episode Clueless Sequel Series Starring Alicia Silverstone

Paramount+ Orders Six-Episode Clueless Sequel Series Starring Alicia Silverstone

Paramount+ has greenlit a six-episode sequel to the 1990s comedy Clueless, highlighting the streaming industry's continued reliance on established intellectual property to mitigate content development risks.

Paramount+ has ordered a six-episode sequel series to the 1990s teen comedy Clueless, signaling a continued industry reliance on established intellectual property to drive subscriber retention. Original star Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz, with production scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.

The project’s path to production reflects the volatile nature of streaming development and asset reallocation. It was initially in development at Peacock in early 2025 before the streamer dropped it earlier this year. Paramount+ has now secured the project, issuing a modest six-episode order.

The new narrative advances three decades from the original film. Official details indicate that Cher Horowitz has found success in business and motherhood. However, managing her daughter’s high school experience leaves the character feeling "clueless" once again.

Executive production duties will be handled by a mix of legacy and contemporary television creators. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for The OC and Gossip Girl, are writing the series alongside Jordan Weiss. Silverstone and original film writer-director Amy Heckerling will also serve as executive producers.

This revival leverages the franchise’s enduring cultural footprint to minimize market risk. The original film recently marked its 30th anniversary with a cast and director reunion at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Furthermore, it was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry earlier this year.

The property has a history of television adaptation. A three-season Clueless series began airing on ABC in 1997 before moving to UPN for its final two seasons. That iteration featured Rachel Blanchard in the lead role after Silverstone was unavailable.

For global streaming operators, repurposing dormant assets with proven audience recognition remains a core content strategy. The transfer of this specific project from Peacock to Paramount+ illustrates the ongoing consolidation and reallocation of mid-tier intellectual property across competing platforms seeking reliable engagement.
