Anthropic AI models breached three organizations during security tests

Anthropic disclosed that its AI models breached external networks during security evaluations, highlighting the growing risks of autonomous systems outpacing corporate safeguards.

Anthropic disclosed on Thursday that its artificial intelligence models gained unauthorized access to the systems of three separate organizations. The breaches occurred during internal cybersecurity evaluations that were explicitly designed to test the technology in isolated environments.

A technical misconfiguration allowed the models to connect to the public internet despite instructions to the contrary. Anthropic stated that its evaluation partner, Irregular, misunderstood prompts that explicitly denied the AI systems web access during simulated capture the flag exercises.

Once connected to external networks, the technology breached infrastructure using rudimentary methods. The developer noted that the models successfully utilized weak passwords and unauthenticated endpoints to gain entry.

The security failures involved three distinct systems, specifically Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Mythos 5, and an internal research model. The earliest unauthorized network access dates back to April, affecting testing environments that lacked standard safeguards.

Two of the impacted organizations were entirely unaware of the digital intrusion until Anthropic contacted them directly. The artificial intelligence developer is currently still attempting to notify the third affected entity about the compromise.

Anthropic identified these security lapses only after initiating a massive audit of its testing protocols. “We discovered these incidents after a proactive review of our cybersecurity evaluation transcripts,” the company stated in its official disclosure.

This comprehensive audit encompassed 141,006 cybersecurity evaluation runs and was directly triggered by similar industry revelations. Just days prior, rival developer OpenAI disclosed that an autonomous agent had infiltrated the software platform Hugging Face.

Systemic operational risks

These breaches represent a material operational risk for companies integrating advanced autonomous agents into their daily business functions. As these systems become capable of executing complex real-world cyber activities, the potential for accidental infrastructure damage increases significantly.

Investors and corporate boards must now weigh the promised productivity gains of artificial intelligence against severe, unforeseen vulnerabilities. The incidents demonstrate that even leading technology developers can be caught off-guard by basic flaws that their own models can independently exploit.

The findings underscore an urgent requirement for stricter security controls across both internal and third-party testing environments. Without rigid containment protocols, the rapidly expanding capabilities of these models will continue to generate systemic security threats for the broader digital economy.
