Newport County appoints Hayden Mullins as manager to stabilise club operations

Newport County have appointed Hayden Mullins as their new permanent manager, tasking the former Fulham under-21 boss with stabilising the League Two club. The appointment follows the shock late-June departure of Christian Fuchs, who guided the team to safety after they were four points adrift when he replaced Dave Hughes last November.
This managerial change marks the third consecutive summer of leadership turnover at Rodney Parade. It also makes Mullins the fourth permanent boss appointed by owner Huw Jenkins since his takeover in January 2024, following Nelson Jardim, Hughes and Fuchs.
For a lower-league football operation, such frequent changes at the top present significant challenges to squad continuity and financial planning. The club will hope Mullins’s background in youth development offers a more sustainable model for roster construction.
Mullins, a former England under-21 international with playing stints at Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Portsmouth, transitioned to coaching in 2016. He previously managed Watford’s under-23s, served two interim spells with their senior team, and had a brief tenure at Colchester United before managing the Turks and Caicos Islands national team in 2023.
His most recent role saw him lead Fulham’s young squad to Premier League Cup glory, defeating Tottenham Hotspur under-21s 4-0 in the final. This pedigree suggests Newport may pivot toward integrating younger, cost-effective talent into the first-team squad.
The transition has already prompted staff changes, with assistant manager Mark Smith departing the club. However, Chris Todd, who managed the team’s pre-season friendlies following Fuchs’s exit, is expected to remain on the coaching staff.
Mullins takes immediate charge of the first team, with his first touchline appearance scheduled for Saturday’s pre-season fixture against Yeovil. The club’s summer schedule culminates in a high-profile friendly against Italian side Roma on 4 August.
Competitive action begins shortly after, with a Carabao Cup first-round tie at AFC Wimbledon on 8 August. Newport will then open their League Two campaign at home against Rochdale on 15 August, providing an early test of the new management structure.
