France tightens Spanish border controls as migration crisis hits Ceuta
Paris has ordered immediate reinforcements at its border with Spain following a massive migrant influx into Ceuta, threatening further logistical disruptions for cross-European freight and passenger transport already hampered by wildfires.
Instructions to immediately "step up controls at the Spanish border" were issued by French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez on Thursday night. The directive includes activating a rapid intervention border force to conduct "in-depth inspections" at crossing points.
During an interview with broadcaster RTL, Nunez stated, "We have a mobile force permanently deployed. We will, of course, take measures if there are movements toward French territory." Schengen zone rules generally permit frictionless travel, yet member states retain the legal right to reinstate checkpoints when deemed necessary.
This sudden policy shift follows a massive overnight crossing from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Authorities estimate that roughly 40,000 individuals have entered the territory in recent days, overwhelming a local population of just 80,000.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is traveling to the enclave to manage the escalating situation. In response to the overwhelming numbers, Madrid has already dispatched troops to reinforce local security.
For transport operators and supply chains, the border tightening introduces fresh friction into cross-border trade. Nunez promised, "In any case, we will obviously strengthen border controls," though the exact locations of the new checks remain unspecified.
These new security measures coincide with severe logistical bottlenecks caused by ongoing wildfires in southwestern France. The A63 motorway, a primary freight and passenger route between the two nations, remains closed south of Bordeaux.
Rail operators are facing similar paralysis, with national carrier SNCF halting mainline services south of Bordeaux. The railway authority has confirmed that these suspended routes will not resume operations until at least Sunday, August 2nd.
Nunez addressed the diplomatic coordination with Madrid, noting he had already spoken with his Spanish counterpart. He confirmed that further discussions between the two interior ministries are scheduled for Friday.
