Liverpool squad tensions surface on US tour amid £21.7m transfer backdrop
A public dispute between Liverpool players during their North American pre-season tour highlights the internal friction facing the club as it navigates a managerial transition and crucial contract negotiations.
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was involved in a heated exchange with teammate Dominik Szoboszlai following the club's 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. The argument, which later included Kostas Tsimikas, occurred as the squad walked across the pitch to acknowledge supporters after the final whistle.
While the exact trigger for the confrontation remains unconfirmed, tensions were visible during the match itself. When Szoboszlai was substituted, he handed the captain’s armband to Tsimikas rather than Jones, and Tsimikas was later filmed throwing the armband onto the ground during the post-match dispute.
The on-pitch friction coincides with significant asset management decisions regarding Jones. The 25-year-old midfielder has only one year remaining on his current contract at Anfield, a situation that recently prompted Liverpool to reject a £21.7m transfer offer from Inter Milan.
Retaining key personnel is a priority for new manager Andoni Iraola as he attempts to stabilize the squad. Iraola publicly backed the midfielder earlier this month, describing him as a great player and expressing his hope that Jones remains at the club.
Addressing the incident, Szoboszlai avoided specific details but emphasized the need for unity during a period of structural change. "Now that a couple of guys have left and maybe we are not the oldest in the team but we've been here a long time, we are all in the same boat," he said.
Managing a transitional squad
Szoboszlai noted that the remaining squad members are committed to the club's long-term project under the new management. "We have a captain in Virgil [van Dijk] and we will follow him everywhere with what he and the gaffer says," he added.
Club sources maintain that such disagreements are standard within elite sporting environments and only became public due to the post-match lap of honour. Liverpool will conclude their North American pre-season tour on Sunday when they face Leeds in Chicago.
