Marvel Abandons Blade Reboot Following Years of Script Struggles

Mahershala Ali has officially confirmed he is moving on from Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, effectively ending a project that has languished in development since 2019. The actor stated that the studio never committed to making the film despite holding him under contract for years.

“They have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie,” Ali said in a recent interview. He added that the prolonged delay and ultimate collapse of the project are questions that Marvel executives must answer.

The cancellation highlights the financial risks of prolonged development cycles for major studios managing billion-dollar intellectual properties. Studio head Kevin Feige publicly acknowledged the failure, attributing the collapse to a script that never evolved from a good script to a great script.

Feige described himself as feeling like a gigantic loser and failure for being unable to get the project off the ground with Ali. The film’s original director, Bassam Tariq, departed the production in 2022 just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin.

Ali and Tariq have since reunited for an independent film titled Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2026. The project allowed Ali to utilize the extensive sword and stunt training he originally undertook for the Marvel property.

Ali noted it was a huge relief to finally apply that physical preparation to a completed project. The inclusion of sword choreography in the new film’s promotional material serves as a deliberate nod to the abandoned superhero role.

As Marvel writes off the Blade investment, the studio is pivoting its supernatural franchise strategy. The company recently announced that Ryan Gosling will star in a new Ghost Rider film, directed by Shawn Levy following his work on Deadpool & Wolverine.
