Serina ahead of schedule in Parkinson’s therapy trial
Serina Therapeutics has completed early dosing in a Parkinson's drug trial, advancing a delivery technology that could lower long-term healthcare costs for Europe's aging population.
Serina Therapeutics has completed enrollment and dosing for the first cohort of its Phase 1b trial evaluating SER-252 in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease. The clinical-stage biotechnology company reached this milestone ahead of its previous target of the end of the third quarter of 2026.
The therapy uses Serina’s proprietary POZ Platform to release apomorphine gradually under the skin. Current apomorphine treatments typically require continuous pump infusions and frequently cause troublesome skin reactions, complicating long-term use. By providing a more stable supply of dopamine, SER-252 aims to reduce the motor complications that emerge after years of standard treatment.
This approach reflects a broader shift in the biotechnology sector toward optimizing existing drugs rather than discovering entirely new molecules. For investors, this strategy offers a more capital-efficient path to market with a fundamentally lower clinical risk profile. The underlying POZ technology has applications beyond Parkinson’s, extending to RNA-based treatments and antibody-drug conjugates.
An independent Safety Monitoring Committee will now conduct a blinded review of the safety and tolerability data from the eight participants across sites in the US and Australia. This review must clear the trial to proceed to the next dose-escalation level.
Commercial validation of the company's delivery platform is already evident. Serina has entered a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Pfizer to explore the use of its technology in lipid nanoparticle drug delivery formulations.
For European health systems, these developments carry tangible economic implications. As the continent's population ages, Parkinson's disease presents a growing burden on public finances and long-term care infrastructure. Therapies that can preserve patient mobility and smooth out unpredictable symptoms—without relying on complex, expensive pump equipment—could meaningfully reduce the daily costs associated with managing chronic age-related conditions.
