Spanish clubs target Premier League defenders as European transfer spending accelerates
Major European clubs are reshaping their squads through high-value cross-border transactions, highlighting the continued financial dominance of the Premier League and the strategic asset positioning of Spanish giants.
The European football transfer market is witnessing significant cross-border movement, headlined by Arsenal reaching a 90m euro (£77m) agreement in principle with Newcastle for Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. This nine-figure commitment underscores the premium top-tier clubs are willing to pay for established midfield talent.
In Spain, market dynamics are shifting as La Liga giants position themselves to acquire high-value defensive assets. Tottenham’s Cristian Romero, 28, is exploring a move to Spain after his proposed transfer to Inter Milan stalled over personal terms. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid have all registered interest in the Argentine defender.
Real Madrid is also taking a firm stance on its existing assets.
