Joe Root reappointed England Test captain to evolve Bazball
Joe Root's return as England Test captain ensures brand continuity for the national cricket team as it transitions to a new coaching regime ahead of a key broadcast series against Pakistan.
Joe Root has been reappointed as England's Test cricket captain, replacing the retired Ben Stokes under incoming head coach Stephen Fleming. The 35-year-old assumes the leadership for a second time, having previously held the role for a record 65 matches between 2017 and 2022.
The appointment provides a measure of stability for English cricket's commercial operations and public profile. The highly aggressive "Bazball" style introduced by former coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes successfully revived the team's marketability and fan engagement before their recent exits.
Root has signalled he will not abandon this established commercial and sporting identity. "We'll try to continue a lot of the good stuff we did over that period and not finding ourselves back to where we were before Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Ben [Stokes] took over," he told the ECB. He added that the strategy is to "evolve and tweak things" to consistently compete against top nations.
His previous tenure ended amid poor results, with just one victory in his final 17 matches and a 4-0 Ashes defeat. There were also concerns about the captaincy impacting his individual performance, as his batting average dropped by nearly seven runs while wearing the armband.
Root insists he is a changed leader. "[I'm] hugely different," he said. "All the experience you have along the way throughout that period you will be shaped into a slightly different person. I think that will be very similar in how I want to take this team forward."
The new era also relies heavily on Fleming, who left his post as head coach of Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings. Root said Fleming's vision for the team was a primary motivation for accepting the role again. "He was a big reason why I wanted to do it," Root said.
The new leadership pairing faces an immediate broadcast and public test. Root takes charge for a three-match Test series against Pakistan this month, with all matches carried live on Sky Sports. The series begins at Headingley on August 19, moving to Lord's on August 27 and Edgbaston on September 9.
