Bournemouth ends £200m sell-off with £25.7m Silva signing

AFC Bournemouth has completed the signing of Portuguese defender Antonio Silva from Benfica for an initial fee of £21.4m, with a further £4.3m in potential add-ons. The 22-year-old arrives on the English south coast after establishing himself as a regular in Lisbon since 2022. During that time, he gained valuable experience across the Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup.

The acquisition represents a deliberate shift in Bournemouth's financial and competitive strategy. After selling more than £200m worth of playing talent last year, the club is now actively reinvesting in the squad. The Silva transfer follows the earlier arrival of striker Alvaro Rodriguez from Elche in a deal also structured to reach £25.7m.

For Benfica, the sale underscores the continued profitability of the Portuguese club's player-trading model, a key economic engine for the Primeira Liga side. Club sources indicated that an agreement with Bournemouth was only reached after Benfica's Europa League qualifying-round victory over Swiss side St Gallen on Thursday. This timing ensured the defender remained available for European competition until the transfer was legally secured.

Bournemouth identified the signing as a priority to replace Marcos Senesi, who completed a free-transfer move to Tottenham earlier this month. Silva, who has 20 senior international caps, was part of Portugal's squads for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, though he was not selected for the final tournament squad this summer by Roberto Martinez. He will integrate into a team adapting to a new management structure under Marco Rose.

The club's president of football operations, Tiago Pinto, is now focused on ending the cycle of heavy outgoings. Bournemouth is determined to resist transfer offers for three key first-team players: Alex Scott, Rayan, and Junior Kroupi. That defensive resolve will face immediate testing, however, as Kroupi sustained an injury in pre-season training that will sideline him for three to four months.

"Antonio is a player we have admired for a long time and we're delighted to welcome him to AFC Bournemouth," Pinto said. "Despite being only 22, he has already built an outstanding level of experience at one of Europe's biggest clubs. He is ambitious, has a proven winning mentality and knows what it takes to compete for trophies."
