Patti Smith holds private audience with Pope Leo XIV
The punk rocker's 40-minute meeting with the pontiff signals the Vatican's continued use of cultural diplomacy to engage with European society.
Patti Smith held a private 40-minute audience with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace on July 31. The Vatican subsequently released official photographs and video footage of the encounter across its social media channels.
Smith was accompanied by Reverend Antonio Spadaro, the Vatican’s Undersecretary for Culture and Education. Spadaro noted that the musician was initially almost speechless in the Pope’s presence, but the two quickly established a strong connection.
The meeting underscores the Vatican’s continued reliance on cultural diplomacy to maintain dialogue with broader European society. Spadaro characterized the interaction as a meeting of minds, writing on X that it "felt more like a conversation between two people discovering they were old friends." He said they shared memories "woven from words and music, dreams, visions and hopes – both from yesterday and for today."
"When that door opened, something happened," Spadaro added. "A spark was lit – one that came with a few lighthearted moments, but also with a profound sense of emotion and of a shared mission in this challenging world." He highlighted their parallel paths as "Two Americans, two Chicagoans. Two remarkable figures whose voices speak hope to a divided world: the ‘priestess of rock’... and the Holy Father."
While Smith is not a Catholic, she maintains a longstanding relationship with the Holy See. She performed at the Vatican’s 2014 Christmas concert, a booking that drew sharp criticism from conservative groups due to the opening line of her track ‘Gloria’: "Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine."
Following the death of Pope Francis in April last year, Smith published a poem in his memory. "Farewell dear Pope Francis," she wrote. "Nature and poetry and the suffering shall miss their champion."
Smith posted an image from yesterday's audience on her Instagram, calling it "A moment that shall forever produce a smile." The musician remains an active presence in European public and cultural life, with a scheduled appearance at the Dua Lipa-curated London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre in October.
